WE ARE OCEAN + INTO THE OCEANIC are bringing the ocean centre stage, through a series of international events and film screenings, offering a platform for young people, policymakers, artists, scientists and the public to come together and discuss ocean protection, climate change and Venice as an action site.
ARTPORT_making waves’ curator and director Anne-Marie Melster presented INTO THE OCEANIC, showcasing the work by international artists Elizabeth Ogilvie & Robert Page, plus ARTPORT curated artists during the 2022 Venice Biennale, in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR) Venice, at their historic headquarters on Riva dei Sette Martiri, the stunning main promenade on the Grand Canal. This base for WE ARE OCEAN + INTO THE OCEANIC in Venice acted as a dynamic hub during the key first week of the 2022 Venice Biennale, presenting a series of indoor documentary film screenings, seminars and events. This project gathered several interdisciplinary marine specialists to contribute to a city-wide programme, as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
Elizabeth Ogilvie & Robert Page will develop their project INTO THE OCEANIC, again working with key marine scientists and a major company in the seaweed industry for ambitious screening events at the 2023 Architecture Biennale – considering Venice as an action site.*
This strategy for a major project evolving from their success at COP26, will showcase the experiential semi-abstract outdoor video projections exploring key marine ecosystems, and be projected large-scale onto a prominent building façade alongside indoor screenings of Ogilvie + Page’s INTO THE OCEANIC 70-minute artist’s documentary and including dialogue with marine scientist colleagues as part of a programme for youngsters.
Ogilvie + Page’s driving objective of the INTO THE OCEANIC project is to engender hope and encourage active participation, particularly among young people, in tackling environmental issues, through the democratisation and understanding of climate science and research, working creatively to encourage and involve different communities, and through securing egalitarian access to art, science and knowledge.
